I have been tutoring and teaching part-time off and on for the past 15 years. My sweet husband said he saw how fulfilled I was tutoring and encouraged me to take it full-time. In 2017, I left my job as a project manager and opened Problem Solved Tutoring. I've loved every minute of it!
During the day, I now teach small group classes to home schoolers (check us out here), and in the evening, tutor students in a 1-on-1 setting out of my home in south Anchorage. I focus primarily on middle grade students (5th-10th) studying fractions up through algebra 2. Teaching math is my passion. I absolutely adore each and every one of my students and love helping them succeed. My goal is to help increase your student’s confidence so they walk into the classroom prepared to tackle those difficult math challenges.
When I'm not talking about my undying love of the quadratic equation, you can find me paddleboarding, traveling with my husband and son, hanging out with my beloved golden retrievers, or reading a book on my deck in the sunshine.
Lorena currently works as a fish biologist, a job she’s had her heart set on since the third grade! Prior to that, she was a biologist focusing on fisheries research. This past summer marked her tenth season of shipboard sampling in the Arctic marine environment. To say she knows fish and biology is an understatement! She also has a great background in math... she once had to use trig to calculate the amount of wire used for a trawl. (Of course, when you’re out to sea, there’s no google or fancy calculator at your disposal!)
In addition to working as a biologist, Lorena comes to us as an experienced tutor with clients ranging from elementary school all the way through college-level trig and calc. Our elementary kids love her because she’s patient and kind... parents love her because she’s skilled at keeping her students focused on the task at hand. 🙂
(Edit for fall 2019: I have other tutors coming on board, but haven't had a chance to update the website... thanks for your patience!)
